In late January of 2015, Holocaust survivors and world leaders gathered to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Approximately 300 survivors, the youngest of whom are now septuagenarians, made the trip to Poland to remember their collective past and to urge the world not to forget, lest history repeat itself. They stood on the grounds of Auschwitz on either side of a railway track, which 70 years ago separated families and friends into those that might live and those that would soon die.
85-year-old survivor Roman Kent made an impassioned speech to the leaders present. He broke down in tears as he pleaded for the past never to repeat itself, while American survivor Marcel Tuchman pointedly old reporters that the telling of the story must continue to keep the memory alive. American philanthropist Ronald Lauder cautioned about the increasing prevalence of anti-Semitism in Europe and reminded the world of the need to speak out.
